NCC Hosts Two-Day Workshop in Lagos to Drive Digital Transformation
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently hosted a two-day workshop in Lagos, Nigeria, with the aim of fostering collaboration and a Whole-of-Government approach in regulating the communications sector to drive digital transformation. The event, themed "Building and Driving Synergy in Regulating Communications for the Digital Transformation of Nigeria," was attended by Attorneys-General from across the country.
The workshop, which held from July 29 to July 31, 2025, was opened by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi. In his address, Fagbemi emphasized the importance of digital transformation for Nigeria's socio-economic development.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the NCC's Executive Vice Chairman, framed Attorneys-General not only as law enforcers but as key architects of Nigeria's digital economy. He urged synergy between federal and state institutions to align policy, enhance federal-state cooperation, and integrate law with technology governance to enable broadband expansion, AI governance, and digital resilience, thereby accelerating Nigeria's digital economy.
Key discussions during the workshop focused on tackling challenges to unlock the sector’s potential by addressing legal, regulatory, fiscal, and operational issues. The workshop emphasized the need to review the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 to reflect current digital realities, streamlining tax regimes to improve investment, clarifying and eliminating regulatory overlaps, and operationalizing the Executive Order on protecting Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
Additionally, the workshop highlighted the importance of fostering synergy between the legal community and the telecommunications sector to ensure a robust and effective regulatory framework for Nigeria's digital future. The initiative reaffirms the NCC's commitment to collaborating with legal professionals to navigate emerging technologies and ensure a digital future that is beneficial for all Nigerians.
The workshop concluded on Thursday, July 31, 2025, marking a significant step towards digital transformation in Nigeria. The event underscored the NCC's dedication to ensuring a regulatory framework that supports the growth and development of the communications sector, ultimately contributing to Nigeria's socio-economic development.
