Humic acid, a natural organic compound, can initially enhance water retention in dry garden soils. It does this by holding onto water molecules due to its hydrophilic properties, acting as a moisture reservoir. Additionally, it promotes soil aggregation, creating larger pore spaces for better water infiltration and retention. This improves the soil's structure and water-holding capacity, enabling plants to absorb water more efficiently.

However, the spread of humic acid in dry soil should be avoided in excess. It can lead to poor soil structure and reduced water retention if not managed properly. Arid soils can support plant growth for only 90 consecutive days, making water management crucial. Alternative methods to improve water management in dry garden areas include mulching, which helps retain soil moisture; using drought-resistant plants, which require less water; and installing drip irrigation, which delivers water directly to plant roots, minimizing evaporation.

While humic acid can temporarily improve water retention in dry garden soils, it should be used judiciously to avoid long-term soil degradation.
