Fraunhofer IOSB-AST's Cybersecurity Lab Unveils 'Hack the Grid' at HANNOVER MESSE 2025
Fraunhofer IOSB-AST's Cybersecurity Learning Lab for Energy and Water Supply is set to unveil its latest training module, 'Hack the Grid: Mission OT Security for Energy and Water Supply', at the upcoming HANNOVER MESSE 2025. The event runs from March 31 to April 4, 2025, and the module will be showcased at the Industrial Security Circus joint booth in Hall 16 (A12).
The new training approach has already proven successful in a pilot phase, conducted with a major German energy provider in March 2025. The goal is to equip participants with the skills to identify vulnerabilities, develop attack strategies, and proactively protect companies from cyber threats. The training utilises a mobile IT/OT hardware demonstrator, combining common automation technology, firewalls, monitoring, and network components.
Participants engage in a 'Capture-the-Flag' exercise, earning points for each 'flag' captured. These points can be used as aids for specific questions, adding a gamification element to the learning process. The lab has expanded its training portfolio to include this module and now offers it in both in-house and regular presence formats.
The 'Hack the Grid' training enables participants to switch roles between attacker (RED team) and defender (BLUE team), providing a comprehensive understanding of both offensive and defensive strategies in cybersecurity. With its successful pilot and upcoming presentation at HANNOVER MESSE 2025, the Cybersecurity Learning Lab for Energy and Water Supply continues to strengthen its position as a leading provider of practical cybersecurity training in the energy and water supply sectors.
