Fraudsters leveraging artificial intelligence to fake celebrity Sir Billy Connolly's identity
In a recent development, renowned comedian and actor Sir Billy Connolly has warned his fans about online scammers impersonating him using artificial intelligence (AI). The scammers are creating deepfake images and cloning his voice to pose as him on social media and email platforms.
The imposters have been reported to create multiple deceptive social media and email accounts, replicating Connolly's voice from just a few seconds of publicly available audio or video recordings. They then reach out to his fans through direct messages, soliciting personal information, money, or promoting fake goods or meetings.
To add authenticity to their scams, the scammers utilize Connolly's likeness and voice, which can be created by AI. This method exploits public familiarity with celebrities for criminal intent.
Sir Billy Connolly clarified that he only uses one official Facebook account and a website (billyconnolly.com) and does not interact directly with fans. He also emphasized that he never asks for money or personal information. Therefore, any such requests are scams.
His wife, Pamela Stephenson, has also been targeted by similar AI-driven impersonations. This method leverages deepfake technology and voice synthesis to exploit public familiarity with celebrities.
Sir Billy Connolly never interacts directly with fans or supporters and would never suggest they direct message him, meet him, send him money, or purchase goods directly. If fans are asked for any of the above, it is a scam.
