Royal Mail Unveils Stamp Set Celebrating British Steam Locomotives
Royal Mail is set to release a new stamp set honouring the heritage of British steam locomotives, marking 200 years since the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. The stamp issue, developed in collaboration with the National Railway Museum and Darlington Council, aims to celebrate Britain's enduring legacy of steam locomotion and the era that transformed travel and trade forever.
The stamp set features iconic locomotives such as Locomotion No. 1, Rocket, Mallard, and Evening Star. A miniature sheet of four stamps will be issued, with one stamp dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
Mike Crawshaw, head of heritage and culture at Darlington Borough Council, expressed his honour and excitement over the commemorative stamps, saying, "The importance of the Stockton and Darlington Railway cannot be overstated, and we are thrilled to see it celebrated in this way."
Craig Bentley, director at the National Railway Museum, shared his delight in collaborating with Royal Mail on the stamp issue, stating, "These stamps are a fantastic way to celebrate the history and impact of steam locomotives on Britain and beyond."
The stamps, along with a range of collectible products, are available for pre-order starting from Thursday and will be available for general sale from September 25. However, details about the cost and availability of the stamps have not been released yet.
This stamp issue is part of the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. While no special events or ceremonies have been announced in connection with the stamp release, it is expected to add to the excitement surrounding this significant anniversary.
Despite extensive research, the available search results do not provide specific information about who contributed to the development of the stamp series honouring British steam locomotives and modern railway development in Great Britain. Nonetheless, the collaboration between Royal Mail, the National Railway Museum, and Darlington Council promises a stamp issue that will captivate and educate collectors and enthusiasts alike.
