First Gennaker Wind Farm Offshore Substation Underway
The first offshore substation for the 976.5 MW Gennaker wind farm has left the construction hall at Smulders yard in Vlissingen, Netherlands. The massive structure, named OSS Darß, weighs 3,800 tonnes and measures 48 metres in length, 25 metres in width, and 19 metres in height.
Allseas, a Dutch company specialising in heavy transport and installation, is responsible for moving both offshore substations for the Gennaker wind farm. The first, OSS Darß, has begun its journey, with the second, OSS Zingst, set to follow.
The substations are crucial for the grid connection project led by 50Hertz, the German Baltic Sea transmission system operator. Once installed, they will facilitate the transfer of electricity from the wind farm to the mainland. The next step involves installing transformers inside the offshore substations.
The successful transport and installation of the offshore substations mark a significant milestone in the Gennaker wind farm project. With Allseas handling the complex operation, the substations will soon be ready to support the wind farm's power transmission to the German grid.
