Exploring the User Experience of Meta's New Ray-Ban Display Eyewear
Meta, in collaboration with eyewear brand Ray-Ban, has unveiled the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, marking a significant step in the world of smart eyewear. These glasses are set to hit the shelves in the United States on September 30, 2023, priced at $799.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses offer a variety of features designed to enhance your daily life. The most notable feature is the small display on the inside, righthand corner of the right lens, which provides visual feedback. This display allows users to take and view photos and videos, read and respond to messages, scroll Instagram Reels, and even take video calls.
The glasses also come with a "neural" wristband for navigation, enabling users to navigate with subtle hand gestures. Another impressive feature is the real-time map, which can be particularly useful for navigation.
The glasses also boast several AI-powered features, such as live captioning and translation for conversations, identifying plants, and providing written information cards as responses to AI queries. However, during a demo, the button to accept a video call didn't show up on the display, and the glasses missed a word while dictating a text message.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described these glasses as the only form factor where AI can see what you see, hear what you hear, and talk to you throughout the day. He believes that AI glasses are taking off and consumers are adopting smart glasses at a rate similar to that of "some of the most popular consumer electronics of all time."
The glasses are slightly heavier and thicker than regular glasses or earlier Meta Ray-Ban models. However, Meta emphasizes building the glasses responsibly and educating the public about their safety features. The glasses also have a recording LED light to indicate when they are recording.
Meta unveiled the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses at its annual Connect event, where they were the main attraction. The company also unveiled several updated versions of its more basic, audio-only Ray-Ban and Oakley smart frames at the event.
Meta executives say the glasses were designed to help protect presence and be a glanceable display. Only the wearer can see the display on the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, ensuring privacy for the user.
The glasses are set to be available in a limited set of retail stores in the United States on September 30, with a global rollout next year. With their array of features and AI capabilities, the Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses are poised to revolutionise the way we interact with technology.
