EU Enterprises Hit Hard by ICT Security Incidents in 2023

Alarming figures from Eurostat reveal that 21.5% of EU enterprises experienced cybersecurity incidents in 2023. These incidents led to service disruptions, data corruption, or data leaks. Finland topped the list with 42.2% of enterprises affected, while Austria, Slovenia, and Bulgaria had the lowest shares at 11.5%, 11.6%, and 12.1% respectively.

The electricity sector was hit hardest, with 28.8% of enterprises experiencing incidents. Poland and Malta followed with 32.5% and 28.7% respectively. Apart from Finland, enterprises in the information and communication sector, professional services, real estate, and water supply were also significantly impacted. Eurostat released these figures during the European Cybersecurity Month, highlighting the urgent need for robust cybersecurity awareness across all sectors.

The high incidence of cybersecurity breaches underscores the importance of enhanced cybersecurity strategies. Enterprises must prioritise protecting their digital infrastructure and sensitive data. Further analysis and targeted measures are needed to reduce the impact of cyber threats, particularly in sectors most at risk.
