The Ultimate Home Theater Projector Dream

Essential elements of my ideal projector - and reasons it would perpetually fail:

Every piece of tech is a balance between features and limitations. Projectors, especially in their enthusiast market - growing by leaps and bounds - are no exception. Designers constantly evaluate trade-offs, focusing on specific aspects that set their product apart. But what if we could have it all? I've been pondering that question since testing numerous projectors, and here's my wish list for the perfect portable projector. Disclaimer: My demands are rather impractical, but who says dreams should be realistic?

Marathon Battery Life

My job offers me access to high-end home cinema gear sometimes, which is great for hosting movie nights with friends. With longer days warming up, setting up a projector in the garden as the sun sets is an unparalleled experience. However, my primary concern is battery life. While projectors like the Anker Nebula Mars 3 Air come relatively close with a claimed operating time of 2.5 hours, the actual performance tends to fluctuate depending on factors like volume level and brightness settings. Ideally, I'd want at least three hours of entertainment without needing a mains connection. True, some projectors can use battery packs for extended life, but in my fantasies, portability comes first.

A Lightweight Powerhouse

This leads me to the importance of a lightweight, portable design. Many projectors have wireless setups but can be cumbersome when it comes to moving from place to place. That's why I'm drawn to projectors like the Epson EF-12, which we praised as "smart, small, and seriously punchy" in our review. It weighs just 2.1kg – easy to carry in a bag or even on a bus. Unfortunately, it lacks an integrated battery, but it's still a contender for my ideal projector in other aspects.

Stunning Sound and Picture Quality

I understand that achieving top-notch sound and picture quality in a lightweight, portable projector is a near-impossible feat. Nonetheless, I can't help but dream. Projectors like the BenQ X3100i offer vibrant images and superior sound quality compared to most in their price range (approx. £2099 / $2399 / AU$3599). However, it tips the scales at 6kg – a far cry from the compact, portable design I envision.

There are instances where manufacturers try to reconcile these contradictions. For example, the soon-to-be-released Nebula X1 could offer an interesting solution with its optional 4K projector and wireless satellite speakers bundle. This way, the audio performance does not have to be compromised for a portable design.

So, I am essentially asking for a Frankenstein's monster projector – a marvel that combines the best aspects of our favorite projectors to create something impossibly perfect. Although chances of such a projector appearing on the market are slim, I'm excited to see where projector technology may head in the future.
