EPRI Launches GridFAST: Streamlining EV Charging Infrastructure Planning

EPRI has launched GridFAST, an online portal streamlining communication between fleet operators, charging providers, and the US' 3,200 electric utilities. Key features include matching project locations to relevant utility contacts, displaying EV-related program information, and accepting preliminary site information for future projects.

GridFAST enables customers to right-size their charging needs by considering a utility's existing grid capacity and any EV-related programs they offer. This addresses historical challenges where grid planning for new electrical loads took longer than EV procurement. The portal aims to encourage early notifications from customers with EV projects to utilities, facilitating grid interconnections.

Several utilities and charging operators have signed on to GridFAST's Guiding Principles, including Ameren, CenterPoint Energy, and Southern California Edison. Companies like Pitt Ohio, with sites served by multiple utilities, find GridFAST's standardization helpful for obtaining information, identifying contacts, and establishing early connections with utilities.

EPRI's GridFAST is poised to revolutionize EV charging infrastructure planning. By fostering early communication and standardized processes, it helps utilities and customers work together more effectively, ensuring grid readiness for the growing number of electric vehicles.
