Minister Hamburg Advocates for Swift Implementation of Digital Pact II in Lower Saxony

Education Minister Julia Willie Hamburg has urged the black-red federal government to expedite the realization of the Digital Pact II, as a considerable number of schools in Lower Saxony are still lagging behind in digital development, according to the Oldenburg "Nordwest-Zeitung."

Approximately 3,000 applications from the initial Digital Pact I remain unattended in Lower Saxony. The relaunch of the program would allocate one billion euros annually towards digital infrastructure in the region.

In addition to this, Minister Hamburg announced that Lower Saxony intends to implement a social index for budget allocation during the current legislative period. This index will supplement the schools involved in the "Start-Chance" program, with social criteria determining additional personnel or resources based on need.

On the matter of antisemitism, Hamburg discussed a potential joint award of a school seal with the Protestant Church, with the Minister open to the idea of naming schools after Holocaust victims. However, decisions on these matters will be made on a local level.

The Minister expressed skepticism towards the proposition of nationwide uniform summer holidays by education associations, citing potential traffic congestion as a concern.

A new PISA study is expected in early summer, and Hamburg anticipates the outcomes of recent measures to produce a lasting impact.

While specific information regarding the current status of Digital Pact II in Lower Saxony and the impact of Minister Julia Willie Hamburg's call for its fruition was not available, it is worth noting that the Council of Europe has designated 2025 as the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education. This initiative aims to fortify digital citizenship skills and may be influential to local digital education efforts in various regions, including Germany.

Furthermore, Germany's economic and fiscal circumstances should be considered when evaluating digital initiatives' implementation and funding, such as Fitch's anticipation of low GDP growth for Germany in 2025.

In light of the Council of Europe designating 2025 as the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education, Minister Hamburg suggests integrating vocational training focused on digital skills within schools in Lower Saxony to prepare students for the technological advancements of the future. To further enhance educational opportunities, Minister Hamburg proposes incorporating vocational training programs in digital technology within the "Start-Chance" program's schools, prioritizing resources to address social needs.
