Monotonous and labor-intensive border checks aren't sustainable in the long run, Rosskopf emphasized. Officers monitoring remote areas of the country could particularly benefit from technological improvements. The Federal Police has been testing such tech since 2018, but the equipment hasn't been procured yet. According to Rosskopf, nearby European countries like the Netherlands and Romania are leagues ahead in this regard.
The police union supports measures that combat illegal immigration and streamline the migration process. However, they question how long the current high personnel demands can be maintained. Rosskopf also anticipates potential delays for cross-border traffic due to the stricter controls that have recently been implemented.
Despite prioritizing minimal disruption to commuter and goods traffic, these strengthened border controls will inevitably cause delays. More border crossings will be monitored closely, including smaller ones, adding to the traffic congestion.
