A shocking tragedy unfolded at the heart of New York City's business district on June 28, 2025, as a shooting incident at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan claimed the lives of five innocent individuals.
Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who bravely responded to the scene, and Wesley LePatner, a colleague at the private equity firm Blackstone. The shooting also left one employee of the NFL hospitalized.
The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura, entered the building with an M4 assault rifle and opened fire in the lobby and on the 33rd floor. Tamura, a former high school football player from Granada Hills, California, reportedly suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), as indicated in his suicide note left at the scene.
345 Park Avenue, a 634-foot skyscraper, is a modern architectural landmark and a symbol of business activity in midtown Manhattan. Notable tenants include Blackstone Group, Rudin Management, the NFL, and KPMG.
In response to the incident, KPMG CEO Tim Walsh and deputy chair Atif Zaim expressed their condolences on LinkedIn for the victims and their families. A representative for KPMG stated, "Our hearts are with the victims of this horrific act and their families, as well as all of our neighbors in 345 Park."
Rudin Management, the building's owner, also lost a young worker in the shooting. As a result, the office tower was closed on the day of the incident, and KPMG gave employees flexibility to work from home. No timing for the office re-opening has been determined as of Tuesday.
The FBI and other law enforcement officers were present at the scene, maintaining a heavy police presence outside the building. Shane Tamura drove cross-country from Nevada and entered New York City via New Jersey on Monday.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the senseless violence that can occur in our communities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those affected by this senseless act of violence.
