Elon Musk's critique is disregarded by Sam Altman as GPT-5 continues to progress successfully
In the world of artificial intelligence (AI), the rivalry between Sam Altman and Elon Musk has intensified, with their acrimony centering on their respective AI companies, OpenAI and xAI. As of August 2025, the feud remains public, with Musk accusing Apple of favoring OpenAI's ChatGPT over xAI's Grok chatbot in the App Store, and threatening legal action against Apple.
The roots of this rivalry can be traced back to 2015 when Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI. However, disagreements led to Musk's departure in 2018, and the subsequent founding of xAI by Musk to compete directly with OpenAI. The acrimony includes multiple lawsuits Musk has filed against Altman and OpenAI, alleging breach of OpenAI’s mission to develop AI for the benefit of all humanity.
OpenAI's latest AI model, GPT-5, has been described as advanced for coding, reasoning, and agent-based tasks. It powers ChatGPT's top features and is also available in a simpler gpt-5-chat-latest version. For the first time, GPT-5 is free for all users. Altman calls GPT-5 a "significant step" towards Artificial General Intelligence.
Microsoft has shown strong faith in OpenAI's work, integrating GPT-5 across its products, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry. The launch of GPT-5 and its popularity have added to the competitive war between Altman and Musk in the tech world.
Musk has become one of OpenAI's most vocal critics, posting on X (formerly Twitter) that OpenAI is going to be outperformed by Microsoft. He has also launched rival AI products, but his efforts seem to be overshadowed by OpenAI's advancements.
Altman has responded to Musk's ongoing criticism of OpenAI and GPT-5. He suggests that Musk's focus on attacking OpenAI is a diversion from building better products. He also hinted that Musk's behavior might stem from personal frustration. However, Altman expressed some sympathy for Musk, acknowledging the pressure of leading innovative companies in a competitive landscape.
The feud between Altman and Musk is no longer just personal-business, but part of a bigger race to dominate the AI sector. The stakes are high, with the potential to revolutionise various industries and reshape the future of technology. As the battle between OpenAI and xAI continues, one thing is certain: the world of AI will continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace.
