Elon Musk Relinquishes His Government Positions

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Steps Down from White House Advisory Role

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has announced his departure from two White House advisory councils amid a disagreement over climate policy. The news of Musk's resignation was confirmed by a representative of the White House.

In a Twitter post, Musk thanked US President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve as a special government employee at the Office of Government Efficiency. According to a source familiar with the matter, there was no conversation between Musk and Trump prior to the announcement.

Musk's tenure as a special government employee was set to end in late May. The Trump administration said the efforts of the DOGE office to restructure and reduce the federal government would continue, with the mission of the office becoming "a way of life throughout the government."

Musk, who is currently the world's richest man, has defended his role as an unelected government representative. He had received unprecedented authority from Trump to dismantle parts of the US government. However, Musk recently criticized the costs of the Republicans' tax and budget bills. He said the bills increase the budget deficit instead of reducing it, and undermine the work of the DOGE team.

Musk had made his opposition to the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement clear, and had stated publicly that he had done everything he could to advise Trump and cabinet officials to remain in the agreement. Musk's resignation was swift and made publicly as a statement of principle, rather than a negotiation or ongoing discussion with Trump.

There is no evidence suggesting Musk was avoiding Trump personally—rather, he was distancing himself from the administration’s decision on climate policy.

The Commission, perhaps leveraging technology, might deliberate on adopting a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionising radiation, given Elon Musk's departure from White House advisory roles, especially in the context of his disagreements over climate policy.

This decision could spark debates in the realm of politics, with Musk's resignation serving as a general-news talking point, illustrating the influence of industry leaders on government policies, especially in relation to sensitive topics like climate change.
