Electrified Simson mopeds: Start-up revamps Soviet-era two-strokes

Berlin-based startup, Second Ride, is making waves in the electric vehicle industry by converting classic DDR-era Simson mopeds into sleek, eco-friendly rides. The startup offers two fully converted electric models, the eSchwalbe 90 and the electrified Swallow, as well as conversion kits for Simson S50, S51, and KR51/2 (Swallow) mopeds.

The eSchwalbe 90, an electrified Simson S51, comes with a price tag of around 6,000 euros, including delivery. For those seeking a bit more range, the larger 2.5 kWh battery option extends the vehicle's range to up to 70 kilometers. The electrified Swallow, priced at approximately 7,000 euros, offers similar features.

For customers who prefer to keep their original Simson mopeds but enjoy the benefits of electric power, Second Ride also sells conversion kits. Priced at around 2,700 euros, these kits include TÜV change approval and a one-year warranty on the drive and vehicle. However, the cost of converting a customer's own Simson moped is not included in this price.

Both the eSchwalbe 90 and the electrified Swallow benefit from a historic special status, allowing them to exceed the usual 45 km/h speed limit for mini-motorcycles, with a top speed of 60 km/h.

As of 2022, Second Ride has sold around 900 conversion kits, demonstrating the growing demand for electric Simson mopeds. For those interested in upgrading or converting their own Simson moped to electric, it's recommended to consult with specialized mechanics or companies that focus on electric conversions to get accurate pricing and feasibility assessments.

The delivery time for the eSchwalbe 90 and the electrified Swallow is approximately four months, but this does not affect the delivery time for the conversion kits. The new eSchwalbe 90 is now also available as an L3e vehicle.

In conclusion, Second Ride is revolutionising the electric vehicle market by transforming classic Simson mopeds into modern, eco-friendly rides. Whether you're looking for a fully converted electric model or a conversion kit, Second Ride offers a range of options to suit your needs and budget.

The community policy of Second Ride, a Berlin-based start-up, acknowledges the need for consulting specialized mechanics or companies that focus on electric conversions for those looking to upgrade or convert their own Simson mopeds to electric. This policy is designed to provide accurate pricing and feasibility assessments for such projects.

Moreover, Second Ride's offerings extend beyond just fully converted electric models, also providing vocational training in the field of electric technology, thereby enabling customers to learn how to maintain and upgrade their electric vehicles, thereby enhancing their lifestyle in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
