Electric Vehicles of Mercedes-Benz to Receive Mega-Watt Charging Capability
Mercedes Accelerates Electric Vehicle Charging with New Fast Chargers
Mercedes-Benz is pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle (EV) charging technology with the development of high-performance fast chargers in collaboration with Alpitronic. These chargers are capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW charging power, a significant leap forward in EV charging speed and efficiency.
According to Eva Greiner and her team, the goal is to make electric car travel as convenient as possible, not just by speed test, but also by minimizing waiting times. Speedtest of EVs can now be as quick as refueling a combustion engine, Greiner stated.
The new chargers, part of the HYC1000 modular charging system, will be integrated into Mercedes charging parks. Currently, there are approximately 20 such parks in Germany, with more to be added with the new system. Worldwide, Mercedes has around 80 of its own charging parks in operation, including in Germany, Austria, Japan, China, and the USA.
Within a year, eight more countries are to be added to the network of Mercedes charging parks. The modular, decentralized concept of the chargers allows for better utilization of individual charging points and easier installation of additional charging points.
The car's navigation system calculates the optimal charging strategy based on the entered destination. Charging to 65 percent might be optimal for quicker arrival, as stated. Efficiency, charging speed, and charging strategy are decisive factors, as stated by Greiner.
Mercedes is also testing solid-state cells, which could potentially offer four-digit electric ranges. This capability was demonstrated in the study Concept AMG GT XX, where over one megawatt of charging power was realized via a charging cable with a CCS plug.
Mercedes has started series production for a new battery generation. The overall package, including charging technology and battery, will be decisive in achieving quick charging times similar to refueling. Initially, Mercedes will moderately increase the power of its own charging stations, starting next year with the carmax HYC1000 modular charging system.
Mercedes charging parks are generally open to drivers of all brands, but Mercedes drivers have advantages due to the link to the Charge Public service. However, these chargers will be reserved for Mercedes drivers during peak hours to ensure quick charging for all.
As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, Mercedes is committed to making electric car travel as convenient as possible. With the development of high-performance fast chargers, the company is taking a significant step towards achieving this goal.
