Electric Transformation: Jeep Compass Sets Sail towards an All-Electric Future
The wait is nearly over for electric vehicle enthusiasts, as the first models of the electric Jeep Compass are set to be delivered by the end of the year. This new addition to the Jeep lineup promises to offer a significant range, stylish design, and a host of modern features.
The electric Compass comes equipped with two battery options: a 74 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of around 500 km, and a larger 96 kWh battery pack, capable of a WLTP range of 660 km. For those seeking a more affordable option, there's the 1.2 MHEV version, priced at 41,000 EUR with 145 PS power.
In the European market, the compact Avenger has long been a popular choice, accounting for around two-thirds of the 132,000 Jeep models sold last year. The electric Compass, however, is poised to challenge this dominance, offering an electric front-wheel-drive version, much like the Opel and Peugeot.
The electric Compass is not just about performance and range. It also boasts a more spacious interior, with a length of 4.55 meters and a width of 1.87 meters, providing more legroom in the second row and a 550-liter boot. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio for additional space.
To enhance comfort, the interior material quality has significantly improved, with soft surfaces and a range of standard features including 20-inch wheels, LED matrix headlights, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera. An optional package adds ventilated and massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a semi-automatic lane change assist.
The electric Compass is produced in Melfi, Italy, and shares its DNA with the Peugeot 3008, 5008, Opel Grandland, and other Stellantis models. The decision to base the modern Jeep Compass on the STLA-Mid platform and to relate it to the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, as well as the Opel Grandland, was made by Stellantis, the parent company of these brands.
The powertrains for the Compass are picked from the Stellantis corporate shelf, with options including a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo and a plug-in hybrid with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a 92 kW electric motor. The plug-in hybrid can drive up to 87 km in electric mode.
For those seeking more power, the top model of the electric Compass is the all-wheel-drive version with 276 kW power, capable of around 600 km on a single charge. The maximum DC fast-charging power for the electric Compass is 160 kW.
While the electric Compass promises to offer a smooth ride on the roads, it remains uncertain if it will venture off-road like its predecessors. Jeep, once a rugged off-road brand, has transformed into a more polished SUV brand, particularly in Europe. The new Jeep Compass aims to return to its former glory, offering a blend of style, performance, and off-road capability.
With prices starting at 51,750 EUR, the electric Compass is around 5,000 EUR more expensive than the Opel Grandland. However, with its impressive range, stylish design, and modern features, it may just be worth the investment for electric vehicle enthusiasts and Jeep fans alike.
