Electric Foiling Boat Tested at Rotterdam Port
The Port of Rotterdam Authority, one of Europe's busiest ports, has entered into a collaboration with Artemis Technologies to lease and operate the Artemis EF-12, a fully electric foiling workboat, for an extended trial period. This innovative vessel, named RPA Zero, will join the port's operations team and help carry out a range of duties.
Artemis Technologies, the company behind the Artemis EF-12 Workboat, was founded in 2007. The company is renowned for its focus on energy and e-mobility solutions in the maritime industry. The collaboration aims to support the port's efforts in achieving its sustainability goals and decarbonising port operations.
The Artemis EF-12 Workboat is designed for efficiency, safety, and adaptability across various maritime use cases. Its hydrofoil design allows the hull to lift above the water during operation, reducing drag and improving energy efficiency. This results in minimal wave impact and exceptional stability, even in choppy waters.
The performance characteristics of the vessel, including its foiling technology, are being evaluated for their operational advantages. These advantages include more stable travel in variable conditions, reduced vibration, and minimal wake. The EF-12's fully electric propulsion system enables zero-emission performance, contributing to a lower noise profile and reduced disruption to other port users and nearby residents.
The Artemis EF-12 Workboat's eFoiler® propulsion system is a key part of its design for efficiency and adaptability. This system can help reduce disruption to other port users and improve safety for personnel working near the water. The design also contributes to a lower noise profile and reduced wave impact, both of which are relevant in a busy and densely populated port environment.
The trial period with the Artemis EF-12 Workboat will provide valuable insights into how electric e-foilers can complement the Port of Rotterdam Authority's new sustainable fleet. The outcomes of the trial will help inform the port's future fleet planning as it transitions to lower-emission vessels.
Artemis Technologies is glad to be supporting one of Europe's most integral ports with its sustainability and safety standards. The deployment of the Artemis EF-12 Workboat in Rotterdam represents an opportunity for Artemis Technologies to demonstrate the EF-12's performance in a major European port.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority, with its increasing use of modern age digital tools in its enforcement and monitoring tasks, aims to be the most sustainable and smartest port. The trial with the Artemis EF-12 Workboat is another step towards achieving this goal.
