Elderly Woman in Hong Kong Loses HK$4.2M in Phishing Scam
An 82-year-old woman in Hong Kong has fallen victim to a sophisticated phishing scam, losing a substantial amount of money. The woman, who wishes to remain unnamed, was targeted in a convincing ruse involving a fake streaming service bill from HBO Max.
The scammer contacted the elderly woman, claiming she had subscribed to a streaming service and needed to settle an outstanding bill. Believing the message to be genuine, she agreed to transfer the funds to the designated account. Unbeknownst to her, she was being duped in a cleverly orchestrated scam.
The woman transferred a total of HK$4.2 million (approximately US$539,800) before realizing the error. Authorities are currently investigating the incident and urge the public to be cautious of such scams, especially those involving unsolicited messages or calls about streaming services like HBO Max or Disney+.
