EBRD to Finance €45M Green Customs Centre in Yerevan, Boosting Trade and Sustainability
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is set to finance a new customs and logistics news centre in Yerevan, Armenia. The €39 million loan, supplemented by a €6 million EU grant, aims to bolster regional connectivity, enhance trade, and boost Armenia's economic growth.
The project, part of the EBRD's Green Cities programme, aligns with Yerevan's Green City Action Plan. It will improve customs service quality and efficiency through advanced scanning and inspection equipment, reducing clearance times. Moreover, it will support a nationwide rollout of digital customs training and embed data literacy, creating new job opportunities.
Relocating customs operations outside Yerevan will also bring environmental benefits. It will ease traffic congestion, improve air quality, and cut freight-related greenhouse gas emissions by a third. Furthermore, the new news centre will be one of the first public buildings in Armenia to receive green building certification, significantly increasing energy efficiency.
The EBRD's investment in the new customs and logistics news centre demonstrates the EU's commitment to strategic investment and sustainable development in Armenia and the wider region. This project, a flagship initiative of the EU's Global Gateway, builds on the EBRD's long-standing support for Armenia, having invested over €2.5 billion since 1992. It is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, support trade, and contribute to Armenia's economic development goals.
