Drones and a flamboyant fireworks show near the Rhine river set ablaze
The Rhine in Flames festival, a symbol of joy, hospitality, and diversity, recently concluded its three-day run in Koblenz. This annual event, attracting tens of thousands of visitors, is one of the most beloved fireworks traditions on the Rhine.
The festival began on Friday and ended on Sunday, with a convoy of 29 illuminated ships passing castles and fortresses, providing a grand spectacle primarily viewed from the water. The event also featured themed cruises, musical entertainment, and festivities along the Rhine.
A new addition to this year's festival was a drone show. Claus Hoffmann, CEO of Koblenz Tourism, expressed his delight at the successful premiere of the drone show, which was an addition to the traditional fireworks display. The drone show, however, was not a part of the Rhine in Flames events in recent years, with the focus traditionally on fireworks and illuminated ships.
The car-free concept was well-received, with the bike parking lot fully utilized. Park & Ride offers were used extensively during the event to manage the large influx of visitors.
The peaceful celebration is a strong sign for Koblenz and the region, according to the mayor of Koblenz, David Langner. The opening ceremony included a performance by the Cologne band "Die Höhner".
Over the three-day event, more than 100,000 visitors were counted. On Saturday alone, between 80,000 and 90,000 people attended the festival. The event passed off peacefully and without incident.
Looking ahead, Rhine in Flames continues to be an annual tradition held from spring through summer at various locations on the Rhine. The Rüdesheim–Bingen segment, for example, traditionally takes place the first Saturday in July every year. Future celebrations will retain the classic format of illuminated ship convoys, fireworks, castle illuminations, and festivities along the Rhine.
The next Rhine in Flames is scheduled for August 7-9, 2026. Visitors can expect another spectacular display of fireworks, illuminated ships, and the unique atmosphere that makes Rhine in Flames a must-see event on the Rhine.
Visitors at the Rhine in Flames festival could also enjoy a variety of gadgets showcased during the event, adding a touch of modern technology to the traditional celebrations. The Maker Bay zone, located near the bike parking lot, featured several interactive exhibits, including drones and virtual reality experiences, designed to engage festival-goers of all ages.
