Drone Incidents Surge Over German Airports, Military Involved
Drone incidents have been on the rise over German airports, with 144 cases registered by the end of August 2023. Authorities are now considering stricter measures to combat this growing threat, as seen in the recent involvement of the German Armed Forces and expanded police powers in Bavaria.
The increase in drone incidents has affected major events and infrastructure. Munich Oktoberfest, the world's largest folk festival, was disrupted by a drone sighting on Thursday evening. Earlier, Munich Airport experienced significant disruptions, with 3,000 passengers affected due to drone sightings. The military facility at the airport was also targeted. In Schleswig-Holstein, authorities are investigating coordinated drone flights over critical infrastructure.
Authorities are taking these incidents seriously. Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt plans to involve the German Armed Forces in drone defense. Bavaria, meanwhile, wants to expand state police powers to shoot down drones in case of doubt. However, the responsible parties behind many of these incidents remain unknown, including those over Paderborn Airport. The Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder has raised concerns about a possible external threat. These incidents are not isolated to Germany; Denmark has also reported drone disruptions in the past week.
With drone incidents increasing and affecting critical infrastructure, authorities are stepping up their response. Involving the military and expanding police powers are among the measures being considered. However, identifying and apprehending those responsible remains a challenge, as seen in the unknown parties behind many of these incidents.
