Schwerin Local Transport to Introduce Digital Ticketing System IDA

Schwerin, Germany - Schwerin local transport is set to introduce a new digital ticketing system, IDA, in response to increasing costs in personnel and energy. The system, currently being tested in 15 trams of the local transport, will use the payment method as the ticket, according to Thomas Schlüter, the head of local transport.

The single-journey ticket will cost 2.70 euros after the planned fare increase on February 1, 2026, an increase of between six and eight percent. Currently, the single-journey ticket costs 2.25 euros digitally in the NVS app and 2 euros at the IDA terminals.

NVS buses will also be able to check digitally purchased tickets, as announced by the manager. For those who prefer not to use digital payment, a prepaid card will be available for purchase at the local transport customer center. The traditional ticket machines will remain until the end of 2026.

The IDA system is being tested by NVS, ICA Traffic GmbH, and Mastercard. By the end of September, the remaining 15 trams of local transport will be equipped with IDA devices. Escorts will be provided in the trams to help with the use of the IDA payment system after the 15 additional trams are equipped.

However, many passengers are skeptical about the new system, particularly older customers who may mistrust or find it difficult to use new technology. Mr. Schlüter mentioned that older customers tend to avoid the round-padded payment terminals in the trams. It is unclear at this time how Schwerin local transport plans to address this skepticism.

Local transport also plans to install the ID-based payment system in buses, presumably in the second half of 2026. For precise and up-to-date details on Schwerin's IDA system, local public transport communications or official municipal sources should be consulted.
