Denmark's EIFO (European Investment Fund for Offshore) extends a £500 million guarantee for the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm project

The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) has made a significant stride in supporting wind energy with its guarantee for the East Anglia Three wind farm. This project, owned by ScottishPower Renewables, is part of EIFO's ongoing commitment to renewable energy.

EIFO was exclusively invited by Iberdrola to participate in the financing for the East Anglia Three project. On August 6, EIFO announced a £500m project finance guarantee, marking the first time EIFO has extended such financing to an Iberdrola-owned entity.

The financing for the East Anglia Three project required the collective participation of 23 banks, in addition to EIFO. The banking consortium that signed a £3.6bn financing package in July included HSBC, Santander, BNP Paribas, Bank of China, and Bank of Ireland, among others.

The strong financier interest in the East Anglia Three project is due to the expected revenues and the increasing investor appetite for offshore wind in the region. In fact, 70% of the financing package consists of senior debt, while the remaining 30% was contributed by Iberdrola shareholders.

The UK government hopes to reach 50GW of offshore wind by 2030, with most of that capacity expected to be in the North Sea. The energy produced by the East Anglia Three wind farm could power 1.3 million homes.

Amazon has signed a long-term power purchase agreement for East Anglia Three, which is a testament to the project's potential. Jose Sainz, Iberdrola's chief financial officer, stated that the financing for the East Anglia Three project is highly strategic for Iberdrola.

The East Anglia Three project is expected to have an installed capacity of around 1400 MW, powered by 95 Siemens Gamesa turbines. While it is not currently the largest offshore wind farm in the world, it is a major project that has set new records in offshore wind development.

The current title of the world's largest offshore wind farm in the North Sea is held by Ørsted's Hornsea 2, which has a capacity of 1.32 GW. However, a larger planned project called the Berwick Bank wind farm off East Lothian, Scotland, with a potential capacity of 4.1 GW, could become the world’s largest once completed.

EIFO's chief commercial officer, Peter Boeskov, commented that the organization aims to continue providing financing for Iberdrola's other projects. In March this year, EIFO announced another project finance guarantee for an offshore wind farm in Taiwan, being developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The UK government has also provided Contracts for Difference (CfD) contracts to East Anglia Three, further underscoring its support for the project.

In a podcast featuring Peter Boeskov discussing opportunities in wind, available at NZI with Atharva, he highlighted the potential for continued growth in the offshore wind sector. As the world moves towards renewable energy, projects like East Anglia Three are poised to play a crucial role in meeting global energy demands while reducing carbon emissions.

  1. The Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) has shown its commitment to both renewable energy and the environmental-science sector by participating in the financing for the East Anglia Three wind farm, a project also supported by various banks.
  2. The financing for the East Anglia Three project, which is owned by Iberdrola, required the collective participation of 23 banks and EIFO, with HSBC, Santander, BNP Paribas, Bank of China, and Bank of Ireland among the consortium.
  3. Although the East Anglia Three wind farm is not currently the largest offshore wind farm in the world, it is a significant project that has set new records in offshore wind development, and EIFO aims to continue providing financing for Iberdrola's other projects, including an offshore wind farm in Taiwan, as the world shifts towards renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.
