Cyberpunk 2077 sequel delayed until 2029 or 2030.
CD Projekt RED's anticipated sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, titled Cyberpunk 2, will not be released for several more years, according to TechSpot's recent report. The development studio confirmed the game's progression from concept stage to pre-production in May 2025, signifying the commencement or preparation for active development.
During the press conference announcing the studio's first-quarter 2025 earnings, head of CD Projekt RED, Michal Nowakowski, declined to provide a specific release date for the revered title. He emphasized the uniqueness of each studio project and typically noted that transitions from pre-production to final release span an average of four to five years. This implied a likely release window around late 2030 or early 2031.
TechSpot journalists suggest this timeline, considering the lengthy process from pre-production to release. It is also noteworthy that the project remains in an early phase, with only a fraction of the studio's workforce currently assigned to it. A majority of the team is dedicated to The Witcher 4, which is also in development and anticipates a 2027 release date.
Cyberpunk 2077, originally announced in 2012 and ultimately released in December 2020, received its first expansion, Phantom Liberty, in August 2022. Meanwhile, well-known insider Daniel Richtman has suggested that Half-Life 3 will be the last significant installment in the franchise, allowing for potential add-ons or spin-offs.
Although the Cyberpunk 2 project is the immediate focus, it is clear that players must exercise patience before immersing themselves once again in the captivating world of Night City.
The Cyberpunk 2 project, currently in pre-production, is expected to take a significant amount of time to develop, given the typical duration from pre-production to release, which averages four to five years. Moreover, with only a fraction of CD Projekt RED's workforce assigned to the project and a majority working on The Witcher 4, the anticipated release of Cyberpunk 2, tentatively slated for late 2030 or early 2031, will require keen anticipation from tech enthusiasts and gamers alike, especially those eager to explore the technology and gadgets of Night City once more.
