Cyberattack Halts Asahi's Japan Operations, Threatens Super Dry Supply
Asahi Group Holdings, the leading beverage company in Japan, has been grappling with a cyberattack since Monday. The incident has led to widespread disruptions, including potential shortages of Asahi Super Dry, Japan's top-selling beer. While investigations continue, the cause and perpetrator remain unknown.
The attack has brought many of Asahi's operations in Japan to a standstill. Most of its 30 factories have been idle, impacting production and logistics. Order processing, shipments, call centers, and some customer services have been suspended since Monday. Asahi has also delayed the launch of a dozen new products due to the incident.
Asahi's shares fell by 2.6% on Thursday as the outage entered its fourth day. However, operations outside Japan, including in Europe, have not been affected. The company has not detected any leak of customer or personal data related to the attack. Japanese media has reported that Asahi may have been targeted by ransomware, although no ransomware group has publicly claimed responsibility. This attack follows a string of cyberattacks on beverage companies worldwide in recent years, including in Russia, Germany, Belgium, and Sweden.
Asahi Group Holdings continues to investigate the cyberattack that has caused significant disruptions to its operations in Japan. While the cause and perpetrator remain unknown, the company is working to restore its systems and minimize the impact on its customers and business. The potential shortages of Asahi Super Dry and delayed product launches highlight the real-world consequences of such attacks.
