The Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI), a major initiative in Germany, is working to improve the findability, accessibility, and reusability of research data across various disciplines. At the heart of this framework is the NFDI e.V. (Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur eingetragener Verein), which acts as a central governing body, overseeing and coordinating the efforts of multiple consortia.

The NFDI e.V. plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the various consortia operate in a coordinated manner. It facilitates collaboration and decision-making processes among the consortia, helping to establish common standards and practices for data management across different disciplines. This promotes interoperability and reuse of data, ultimately enhancing the efficiency and impact of research in Germany.

Each consortium within NFDI is composed of researchers and institutions from specific scientific fields. These consortia are responsible for developing tailored solutions for managing research data in their respective domains. The decision-making process within the consortia is often facilitated through a transparent and collaborative approach, involving stakeholders from the research community.

The NFDI e.V. also provides support for the consortia in terms of training, infrastructure development, and guidance on best practices in research data management. This support is crucial in ensuring that the consortia can effectively carry out their tasks and contribute to the overall goals of the NFDI.

The NFDI e.V. is currently in its building phase, with internal structures being established and organs being formed. The first general meeting of all NFDI e.V. members is scheduled to take place in the coming months, where the three scientific members of the "Kuratorium" (board of trustees) will be elected.

The operation of the NFDI e.V. is outlined in its "Satzung" (constitution), which can be found at NFDI Satzung. Any organization that is part of a funded NFDI consortium or any legal entity expected to make a substantial contribution to the NFDI e.V.'s cause can apply to become a member.

One of the first consortia created within the NFDI e.V. was the consortium "gemäß Satzung", for which our worker and another worker were unanimously elected as spokesperson and deputy spokesperson, respectively, in a virtual meeting via Zoom on 25 June 2021. All but three partners of the consortium "gemäß BLV" (funded NFDI consortia) have joined the NFDI e.V. as of the writing of this article.

The NFDI e.V. was founded on October 12, 2020, and is a German legal entity that provides the NFDI with an independent operating framework. It is progressively establishing various organs to oversee and advise its work, with the aim of ensuring the success and impact of the NFDI initiative in improving research data management in Germany.

  1. The NFDI e.V.'s role extends beyond coordination, as it also offers support in areas such as training, infrastructure development, and guidance on research data management, ensuring that each consortium can effectively contribute to the NFDI's goals.
  2. As the NFDI e.V. progresses, it is integrating technology and science into its initiatives, fostering collaboration and standardization across various disciplines, ultimately aiming to enhance the efficiency and impact of research through improved data management in Germany.
