Sen. Ted Cruz Goes at It with China in AI Race, Pitches Laissez-Faire Regulation
China's advancement in AI technology could result in a devastating scenario, according to Ted Cruz's assertions following a hearing featuring Sam Altman.
In a fiery Congressional hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, took a jab at China, likening AI to the internet in the 90s, and warning that losing the AI race to the communist nation would be a catastrophe.
Following a hearing featuring executives from major AI companies like OpenAI and AMD, Cruz told Fox News Digital that the consequences of lagging behind China in AI technology would be "disastrous," both economically and militarily.
"We are in a worldwide competition for AI dominance, and the victor will control the coming decades," Cruz declared in a later interview.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, one of the witnesses testifying, confirmed that the U.S. currently holds the lead, but warned that China ain't far behind.
"China's relentless pursuit of AI supremacy shouldn't be underestimated," Altman stated.
Cruz continued, "AI could be as transformative as the internet, and the U.S. needs to stay ahead. In the late 90s, President Clinton took a hands-off approach to regulating the internet, and it paid off. Europe, on the other hand, over-regulated, which crippled their growth."
Since then, the U.S. economy has surged ahead of Europe's by a whopping 50%, according to Cruz.
"I'll be introducing legislation soon that creates a regulatory 'sandbox' for AI, safeguarding it from the kind of stifling regulations that put Europe at a disadvantage," Cruz said.
At the hearing, Cruz asked each witness what the consequences would be if a heavy-handed regulatory approach were adopted, similar to the European Union's. Each replied that it would be a catastrophe for AI innovation.
"AI is already sweeping the nation, but it's been a sleeper issue in this election, with Democrats favoring the overbearing European model," Cruz mentioned.
However, Cruz was quick to address concerns about job loss due to AI automation, which has been a heated topic in recent years.
"New technology always leads to economic dislocation, but it also creates jobs," Cruz told Fox News. "We want the benefits, not just the short-term pain that comes with any technological evolution."
Cruz's proposed AI legislation is designed to remove barriers and prevent heavy-handed state regulations, providing a safe haven for the burgeoning AI industry to rapidly expand within the United States. By doing so, the senator hopes to keep China at bay and lead the world in AI technology without excessive government intervention.

- Ted Cruz, in an interview, cited the internet in the 90s as an example of a successful laissez-faire approach to regulation, claiming that excessive European-style regulation could lead to China outpacing the U.S. in AI technology.
- In a later hearing, Senator Ted Cruz challenged witnesses about the potential consequences of adopting heavy-handed AI regulations, similar to the European Union's, with each witness responding that such regulations would be detrimental to AI innovation within the U.S. markets.
