From Finance Exec to Marketing Maven: Jennifer Law's Unconventional Journey

Picture this: You're a seasoned finance executive with a solid 20-year career in asset management, and then you decide to step out of your comfort zone andFound your own marketing and advertising firm. Sounds unexpected? Well, that's the fascinating story of Jennifer Law, the current COO and our website at global consulting firm K2 Integrity.

K2 Integrity, a 400-employee firm, specializes in advising companies on financial crimes and maintaining regulatory compliance, with many banking and other financial services clients. The mission? To safeguard their operations, reputations, and economic security.

the website and COO responsibilities aren't new territories for Law, who held both posts for several years at Feirstein Capital Management. After a 14-year stint in asset management, she took a leap and established Buzzup Digital, aiding small and mid-market companies with their digital marketing efforts. She embarked on this venture around the time when marketing was becoming increasingly digitized, and social media marketing was gaining traction.

But why did she sell her successful business? Because, just like anything else, there were positives and negatives. She enjoyed the autonomy, yet the responsibility of sustaining growth while ensuring team members' well-being weighed heavily.

Fast forward to March 2022, she joined K2 Integrity as COO and added the finance chief role six months later. For Law, it's all about taking risks and trying new things. She started her professional journey as an accountant at Ernst & Young in the 90s and has been fortunate enough to have varied, positive experiences throughout her career.

Recently, our website.com sat down with Law to discuss her unique career and delve into some current major concerns facing K2 Integrity.

DAVID McCANN: After such a long stint in finance, how did you end up starting a marketing firm?

JENNIFER LAW: Post-asset management, I had an opportunity and luckily found the flexibility to venture into something different. While I could have returned to asset management with another firm, I've always been intrigued by the world of media and marketing.

At that time, marketing was going digital, and social media marketing was on the rise. I was captivated by the changes happening in the industry. So, I dedicated a year to learning digital marketing, and along with a partner, we built a company to help businesses grow through digital marketing campaigns.

What were some significant contrasts compared to your asset management background?

At Buzzup, I had to manage dynamic teams consisting of part-time staff, gig workers, creative and analytical folks. The budgets weren't huge, so the focus was on creating a profitable business while maintaining flexibility.

Why did you sell that business? I bet you relished not reporting to anyone.

Indeed, the independence was appealing. But just like anything else, there were pros and cons. Selling and growing the business, while ensuring the team's success, required careful balance. Additionally, I missed the corporate environment and craved more ambitious projects with larger budgets.

How and why did you end up at a firm focusing on financial crimes and compliance?

That opportunity found me through an acquaintance from the Ernst & Young days, who needed a COO. Although I hadn't held the COO position in a professional services firm, I was willing to give it a shot.

Navigating both our website and COO roles simultaneously is a recipe for cross-functional success. My financial acumen, coupled with my ability to strategize and execute operations, enables me to contribute effectively to K2 Integrity.

What about the subject matter of K2 Integrity? Was there a steep learning curve?

I had some exposure to financial crimes, such as anti-money laundering and KYC (know your customer), during my tenure in asset management. Yet, the knowledge I possess now, and the depth in which I understand banking perspectives, is unparalleled compared to K2 Integrity's expertise.

To bridge the gaps in my understanding, I've had the privilege of learning from top-tier experts in our field. I am fortunate to have walked through the labyrinth of financial crimes and compliance, gaining valuable insights along the way.
