BMW's Spartanburg Plant to Go All-EV by 2030 with $1.7B Investment

BMW's Spartanburg plant, a powerhouse in US automotive exports, has been making headlines with its significant investments in electric vehicle (EV) production and battery supply. The plant, which exported over 225,000 vehicles worth $10 billion last year, is set to undergo a major renovation to produce electric models exclusively by the end of the decade.

The Spartanburg plant, the largest automotive exporter in North America, has been producing popular models like the BMW X5, with over 145,000 units manufactured last year. BMW's commitment to the plant is evident in its substantial investments. The company is pouring $1 billion into the plant for EV production and an additional $700 million for a nearby battery production facility.

The battery plant, once operational, will have an annual production capacity of up to 30 gigawatt-hours. This will be sufficient to supply batteries for six electric models, further solidifying BMW's commitment to electrification. The plant's workforce of 11,000 employees, working in two ten-hour shifts daily, will play a crucial role in this transition. Notably, 70% of the steel and aluminum used in the plant comes from the USA, supporting local industries.

Despite the lack of specific information about Japanese cell partners supplying batteries for BMW's electric models produced in Spartanburg, the company has been testing humanoid robots from the California-based company Figure at its Spartanburg plant. This suggests a forward-thinking approach to production and logistics.

BMW's Spartanburg plant, already the largest automotive exporter in North America, is poised to become a significant player in the global EV market. With its substantial investments in EV production and battery supply, the plant is set to contribute significantly to BMW's goal of having six electric models by the end of the decade. This move not only strengthens BMW's commitment to sustainability but also underscores the plant's importance to the company's global strategy.
