BMW i8 'Tiger' Prototype: ALPINA's Powerful, Shelved Masterpiece
BMW enthusiasts have been given a sneak peek of an unreleased ALPINA-enhanced BMW i8, codenamed 'Tiger'. The project, led by Martin Schweinhuber, aimed to create a more powerful and distinctive version of the hybrid sports car.
The ALPINA i8 prototype, weighing at least 100 kilograms more than the standard model, was spotted at ALPINA's 60th anniversary celebration. It featured a striking design with wider hips, a large carbon-fiber rear wing, and a quad-exhaust setup. Front canards and ALPINA Classic forged wheels completed the aggressive look.
Under the hood, the modified i8 required additional intercoolers and an eight-speed Aisin gearbox from the second-generation M135i. These changes necessitated a new rear subframe and bigger tires. However, the project was ultimately shelved due to the complexity and expense of the extensive software recalibration required for the bigger engine.
The ALPINA-enhanced BMW i8 'Tiger' prototype showcased a unique blend of power and style. Despite its impressive 455 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) output, the project was abandoned due to production challenges. Fans can only speculate on what could have been, but the images serve as a tantalizing reminder of ALPINA's innovative spirit.
