BASF Venture Capital Helps ACT-ion Battery Technologies Secure $7.5 Million in Pre-Series A Funding Round

ACT-ion Battery Technologies, a venture incubated within Hunt Energy Enterprises LLC, has successfully closed a $7.5 million Pre-Series A funding round. The venture aims to revolutionise the lithium-ion battery industry by developing a cost-effective and efficient method to produce single crystalline cathode active materials (CAMs).

The funding round was led by BASF Venture Capital, with participation from Hunt Energy Enterprises, Mirae Asset Capital, Arosa Capital Management, and LG Technology Ventures. Lillian Shattock, Director of Private Investments at Arosa Capital Management, expressed her support for ACT-ion's technology as a potential pivotal enabler of domestic CAM manufacturing.

Joshua Speros, Investment Manager at BASF Venture Capital, expressed his excitement about leading the financing round and supporting ACT-ion as a partner. He highlighted the venture's mission aligning with BASF's efforts to deliver innovation to customers, focusing on novel battery materials and processes.

Victor Liu, Chairman of ACT-ion, stated that the venture aims to help enable growth for markets such as electric drones, electric vehicles, and power tools. He expressed excitement about the potential impact on the global energy landscape, with the domestic production of battery materials marking a significant milestone in the US CAM industry.

Jin Lim, CTO and Interim CEO of ACT-ion, also expressed his excitement about the funding and its potential impact. He highlighted the venture's continuous process that generates coated single crystal CAM, leading to higher performance and longer cycle life lithium-ion batteries.

The innovation behind ACT-ion's process lies in their development of a method that balances cost reduction, manufacturing efficiency, and material performance enhancement. This likely involves optimised processing to yield high-quality single crystals that improve battery longevity and energy density, while using scalable and energy-conscious manufacturing steps to enable commercial viability.

ACT-ion's technology focuses on improving CAM, a key component in lithium batteries. The venture has demonstrated this manufacturing platform for a variety of chemistries, positioning itself as a versatile solution for the industry. The funds will be used to accelerate ACT-ion's innovative CAM production technology.

By 2025, ACT-ion aims to establish an operational pilot facility, further cementing its position as a leader in the development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. The venture's success could pave the way for a more sustainable and cost-effective future for electric vehicles, drones, and power tools.
