Barnes & Noble Has Ceased Production of NOOK E-Readers

In a recent development, Barnes & Noble, the popular American bookstore chain and e-reader manufacturer, has officially discontinued and retired the older generation NOOK e-readers and tablets. These include the NOOK Simple Touch, NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet, NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, and the Nook First Edition.

These devices, which have been a staple in the e-reading market for over a decade, are no longer supported with software updates or services. However, purchasers retain access to their bought NOOK content, which is preserved in the NOOK cloud.

The NOOK Simple Touch, released in 2011, and its GlowLight variant, released in 2012, were retired in 2024. The NOOK Color, introduced in 2010, and the NOOK Tablet (8GB/16GB), released in 2011, were also retired in the same year. The NOOK HD and NOOK HD+, both released in 2012, were retired as of 2024. The Nook First Edition, Barnes & Noble's first-generation NOOK device, ended support earlier, in 2018.

Despite discontinuing these devices, Barnes & Noble continues to innovate. The Lenovo 9" NOOK Tablet, released in 2024, is their current tablet offering, boasting updated specifications and software (Android 13). For e-readers, the NOOK GlowLight 4e, released in 2025, is their latest model. It features a 6" 212-dpi e-ink screen, weeks of battery life, physical page-turn buttons, and USB-C charging.

In summary, the legacy NOOK e-readers and tablets have been retired and are no longer supported. However, purchased content remains accessible. For ongoing use with Barnes & Noble’s ecosystem, you would need one of their current devices like the Lenovo 9" NOOK Tablet or NOOK GlowLight models.
