B&R Unveils Next-Gen Smart Camera with Edge AI for Real-Time Manufacturing Inspection

B&R Industrial Automation has launched a next-generation Smart Camera, integrating edge AI capabilities for real-time vision processing. This innovation promises enhanced efficiency and flexibility in manufacturing processes.

The new camera, designed for rapid deployment, boasts a drop-in replacement feature for existing installations. It processes image data locally, enabling real-time AI inference at the edge with up to 15x higher efficiency than comparable processors.

B&R's factory-calibrated optics and lighting improve imaging repeatability by a factor of 10 or more, ensuring high-quality input for deep learning models. The Smart Camera supports a full suite of AI-based vision functions from MVTec, including OCR, anomaly detection, object detection, classification, and semantic segmentation.

It offers flexibility in switching models and combining AI functions in custom sequences without interrupting production. The camera can perform multiple inspection tasks in one pass, reducing hardware requirements and shortening cycle times. It can be integrated seamlessly into B&R's Automation Studio engineering environment with a low-code interface.

B&R's new Smart Camera, developed in-house, integrates AI-based image processing directly into the control process. It enables dynamic model switching and hybrid AI-rule-based inspection without halting production or requiring external hardware. This innovation is set to transform real-time defect detection and machine tuning in manufacturing.
