Autonomous Shuttle Project at Zurich Airport Achieves Level 3 Automation
Zurich Airport Launches Flixbus Autonomous Shuttle Pilot Project
Zurich Airport has taken a significant step forward in modernising its transportation services with the launch of a Flixbus autonomous shuttle pilot project. The initiative, which began in March 2025, involves the deployment of autonomous shuttle buses designed to ferry employees between Gate 101 and Gate 130.
The project has been a collaborative effort between Zurich Airport and several partners, including WeRide and British company Aurrigo International. Numerous departments within the company have been involved in the project, ensuring a comprehensive approach to its development and implementation.
A new IT infrastructure has been implemented for the project, and hundreds of test runs and comprehensive technical testing have been performed to ensure the system's smooth operation. These rigorous tests have led the project to reach autonomous level 3, where the buses are currently manned by safety drivers.
The next milestone for the project is autonomous level 4, a significant leap that would involve no safety drivers and only remote monitoring. The Airport plans to test remote monitoring in the near future, paving the way for the Flixbus to operate without human intervention.
During the testing phase, the buses will initially operate without passengers. However, if successful, these autonomous vehicles may be permitted to carry passengers in the future. If this proves to be a success, Zurich Airport would become the first airport in Europe to operate such a system within the flight operations area.
The remote cockpit, which allows for the monitoring of autonomous shuttle buses, has been installed and tested at the ZRH Innovation Hub. This technology will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Flixbus.
If the pilot project proves to be a success, it could revolutionise the way airports handle transportation, making travel more efficient and seamless for passengers. As the project progresses, updates will be provided to keep the public informed about its progress.
