Autonomous Aviation Venture in China Intends to Construct Globe's Initial Aerial Hub for Aerial Drones
Hezhou, a city of 2 million people in southern China, is set to become a pioneer in autonomous transportation with the upcoming construction of the world's first airport for autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs). The project, known as the e-port, is being spearheaded by the Chinese startup EHang.
The e-port, covering 2,500 square meters and boasting a three-story structure, is anticipated to open by the end of 2020. The rooftop will feature four landing pads for self-flying vehicles, while inside, visitors can expect a reception hall, a passenger waiting area, and a zone for departures and arrivals.
EHang's CEO, Hu Huazhi, has expressed excitement about enhancing Hezhou's tourism appeal with AAVs. The city, known for its historical heritage and natural beauty, aims to tap into these attractions to draw domestic tourists. However, the coronavirus could impact the e-port's ability to attract visitors from overseas.
The focus of EHang remains firmly on its home country, China. The company has completed the first US test flights of its pilotless air taxis and received permits to test its electrically driven two-seat passenger jets in Norway.
The e-port could serve as a useful testbed for autonomous planes, which lack unified standards for commercial air travel. EHang aims to create more commercial applications for EHang AAVs, such as aerial sightseeing, with 20 of its two-seater autonomous planes planned for aerial sightseeing around the city.
EHang welcomes local partners to join and embrace the opportunity to provide a safe, autonomous, and green approach to travel and sightseeing. The company's vision is to make Hezhou a tempting destination for domestic tourists, offering an innovative and eco-friendly travel experience.
While the specific timeline for the e-port's completion beyond the end of 2020 remains unclear, EHang's ambitious project marks a significant step forward in the development of autonomous transportation. As the world continues to grapple with the impact of the coronavirus on travel, the e-port offers a glimmer of hope for a future where safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly travel is within reach.
