In an unfortunate turn of events, a voice phishing crime, a type of fraud where victims are tricked over the phone, went uninvestigated by South Korean authorities. The crime occurred on May 22, and the victim wired a total of 70 million won ($40,242) to the perpetrators on two separate occasions.

The incident came to light when a bank teller found the transactions suspicious and reported them to the police. The teller even went as far as calling the police twice to highlight the potential voice phishing scam. However, the police did not launch an official investigation due to the lack of evidence and the victim's consistent claims that the money was for opening a store.

The victim's daughter also filed a report with the police, but the authorities did not act on any of the reports. It was only when members of the same criminal group were arrested in a separate investigation that the police discovered the transfers were linked to a voice phishing ring.

The police officials later revealed to reporters that the victim had consistently claimed the money was for opening a store, which may have influenced their decision not to investigate further. However, the police's inaction has raised questions about their response to cybercrime and the importance of evidence in investigations.

This incident serves as a reminder for individuals to be vigilant against fraudulent activities and to report any suspicious transactions to the authorities immediately. It also highlights the need for law enforcement agencies to prioritise cybercrime investigations and to act swiftly when presented with evidence of potential fraud.
