Australia is set to develop high-security defense facilities near Perth, with the investment being a 'key piece' of the AUKUS story, according to Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles. The development is part of a 20-year plan to turn the Henderson shipyard into a maintenance center for a future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, with the Australian government investing AU$12 billion.

The AUKUS agreement, a strategic pact between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, involves the acquisition of nuclear-powered attack submarines by Australia from the next decade. Under the deal, the US will sell several Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia.

Britain and Australia will also build a new AUKUS-class submarine as part of the agreement. The main goal of the AUKUS agreement is to tackle China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Marles stated that the investment is necessary for Australia to meet its strategic moment and will be welcomed in the US and the UK. He mentioned that the facility will be built in the context of the AUKUS agreement. The defense minister expects that in the future, this facility will be available to the US.

The US President Donald Trump's administration is conducting a formal review of the AUKUS pact. Unfortunately, there is no specific information available about the exact time when the results of this review will be presented.

The development of these facilities could support around 10,000 local jobs. Alongside the submarine facilities, the Australian government's plan also includes the development of facilities to build landing craft for the Australian army and new general-purpose frigates for the navy.

The AUKUS deal, worth hundreds of billions of dollars, is a significant step forward in Australia's defense capabilities. The Australian government's investment in the Henderson shipyard is a testament to its commitment to ensuring Australia's strategic security in the Indo-Pacific region.
