Asahi Cyberattack Halts Japan Operations, Sparking Beer Shortage
Japan's leading brewer, Asahi Group, has been struck by a cyberattack that has brought operations at most of its domestic factories to a halt. The attack, which began earlier this week, has led to a nationwide shortage of Asahi products, with popular convenience store chains like FamilyMart and Lawson running low on stock.
The cyberattack has disabled order and shipment operations at around 24 of Asahi's 30 Japanese factories. The company has confirmed the attack but has not revealed the identity of the perpetrators. Asahi Group generates nearly half of its global revenue in Japan, making the attack a significant blow to its operations.
FamilyMart has temporarily suspended orders and shipments of Asahi products, with no estimated time for resumption. Lawson has warned customers that some Asahi products may become scarce starting Friday, as supplies run low. The company also owns other major beer brands, including Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Grolsch, but overseas sites do not appear to be affected by the attack.
Asahi Group is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. The company has not provided an estimated time for the resumption of normal operations. In the meantime, consumers in Japan may face shortages of their favorite Asahi products.
