Choi Joon-yong, head of HBM business planning at SK Hynix, has confirmed the growing demand for AI-related memory. He also noted a clear link between AI's expansion and rising purchases of HBM chips.

SK Hynix expects this cycle of AI progress and memory technology evolution to sustain growth for years to come. In fact, the company projects a 30% annual growth in the HBM market through 2030, with the custom HBM market potentially reaching tens of billions of dollars by that year.

The arrival of HBM4 is expected to accelerate adoption, even if short-term price drops occur due to temporary oversupply in current-generation HBM3E chips. The HBM4 generation introduces a customer-specific "base die" at the control layer of the memory stack, further enhancing performance by tailoring it to the precise architecture and workload of each client's systems.

While geopolitical policies, including proposed tariffs on foreign-made chips, could affect global supply chains, companies like SK Hynix, which have significant investments in U.S. manufacturing facilities, are less exposed to such measures.

The complex workloads of advanced AI models require HBM due to its critical role in data transfer speeds. This need for faster and more efficient AI memory is further fuelled by the investments in AI by major tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.

In addition to customized solutions, SK Hynix also provides standard, high-performance designs for buyers that do not require deep customization. The company considers its projections conservative, accounting for practical constraints such as sustainable energy supply.
