The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to develop one of the globe's largest data centers, with the assistance of leading artificial intelligence (AI) research organization, OpenAI. This strategic move marks a significant stride in the UAE's technological growth, the proliferation of AI in the Middle East, and OpenAI's future projects.

The mammoth 5-gigawatt data center is set to be constructed in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE. Spanning approximately 10 square miles, the facility is expected to consume as much energy as five nuclear reactors.

During United States (US) President Donald Trump's visit to the Middle East and Gulf countries, the agreement was negotiated. Collaboration on the project is anticipated to involve MGX, an Abu Dhabi investment vehicle, and G42, an Abu Dhabi-based AI company.

While the data center's infrastructure will bolster AI capabilities in the UAE and fortify US ties in the region, concerns regarding national security have surfaced due to potential sharing of critical and sensitive information with companies or countries with ties to China.

Meanwhile, the wide-reaching partnership with OpenAI aims to strengthen AI infrastructure in the UAE and affirm US influence. The Stargate UAE initiative is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to create "frontier-scale compute capacity" globally, with the ultimate goal of supporting safe, secure, and beneficial AI development.
