Artificial Intelligence-led prime minister appointed in Albania; Diella asserts, "I'm not here to supplant human counterparts"
In a historic move, Albania's Prime Minister, Edi Rama, has appointed Diella as the world's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) minister. This appointment comes at a critical time for the country, as Albania's bid to join the European Union hinges on its ability to combat corruption, particularly in public administration.
Despite the opposition's heckling, Edi Rama's government's program was successfully adopted. However, the appointment of Diella has been met with criticism from the opposition leader, Sali Berisha. Berisha has questioned the constitutionality of the AI minister and accused the appointment as a ploy to draw attention away from corruption allegations.
Berisha has also stated that it's impossible to stop corruption with AI minister Diella. This sentiment was echoed by Berisha's party, who have announced plans to appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding the appointment.
However, Diella's role is clear. As the AI minister, Diella is tasked with ensuring public procurement tenders are free of corruption. All public funds subject to this procedure under Diella's control are intended to be perfectly transparent.
The president of the Constitutional Court of Albania, Nexhmi Rexhepi, has yet to comment on the matter.
In a symbolic gesture, Diella spoke via videoconference to Albanian deputies while dressed in traditional Albanian attire. Despite the lack of details on how Diella's speech was generated, the AI minister's appearance was a powerful statement of Albania's commitment to modernising its government.
Meanwhile, Nvidia, a leading company in AI technology, has announced plans to invest $5 billion in Intel for joint AI projects. This investment could potentially boost Albania's AI capabilities and aid in its fight against corruption.
Edi Rama aspires to add Albania to the European bloc by 2030. With the appointment of Diella, the Prime Minister is taking a bold step towards modernising Albania's government and addressing the critical issue of corruption. The outcome of this innovative approach remains to be seen.
