Artificial Intelligence from Russia earns its first international quality accreditation

In a significant move towards responsible AI governance, Yandex, the Russian technology company known for its search engine and other digital services, has successfully undergone an independent audit and certification according to the ISO/IEC 42001 standard for Artificial Intelligence management systems. This makes Yandex one of the few companies from unfriendly countries to have been certified since 2023, joining the ranks of global tech giants such as Microsoft, Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Samsung SDS.

ISO 42001, the first global standard specifically for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS), provides a structured, internationally recognized framework for responsible AI governance, risk management, transparency, and ethical operation. By achieving this certification, Yandex demonstrates that its AI development and deployment processes are governed, traceable, ethically sound, and aligned with industry best practices.

The certification covers crucial aspects such as clear AI governance and leadership, comprehensive risk and impact assessments, robust data management, emphasis on explainability, and integration of human oversight. This certification not only builds trust with customers, regulators, and business partners but also helps Yandex align with international AI regulations like the EU AI Act, providing a practical framework for regulatory compliance without stifling technological innovation.

Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily, expressed optimism about the potential for increased collaboration and knowledge-sharing among Russian companies regarding AI certification and best practices. He believes that more Russian digital market participants will show interest in certification in the future, following Yandex's lead.

Experts believe that the growing interest in AI certifications will lead to increased competition among digital market participants. For investors, AI certificates guarantee the stability of AI capitalization, making them an essential factor in decision-making.

Yandex's success in obtaining an AI certification could encourage other companies to prioritize ethical and secure AI practices. Anna Zinchuk, the head of the company's compliance and information security training service, stated that "Yandex" began establishing processes to ensure the ethics and security of AI before the announcement of YandexGPT.

Kuskov noted that this is important for users who are wary of AI products due to concerns about their security. He emphasised the importance of AI certificates in building trust with users and partners, stating that Yandex's certification according to the ISO/IEC 42001 standard is a significant advantage in attracting partners and clients.

With this certification, Yandex positions itself as a leader in responsible AI deployment in Russia and globally, signaling adherence to the highest standards of AI ethics, governance, and transparency. However, for confirmation and details of Yandex's specific certifications, one may need to consult direct announcements from Yandex or industry news sources.

Yandex's acquisition of the ISO/IEC 42001 certification in Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS) underscores their commitment to ethical and secure AI practices, aligning with industry best practices for governance, risk management, transparency, and ethical operation. This certification could potentially spark a wave of AI certification among other Russian digital market participants, as more companies prioritize responsible AI deployment and aim to build trust with both users and regulatory bodies.
