Art dealer Hauser & Wirth will establish a new branch in Palo Alto by the year 2026.
In a move that signals a renewed interest in the Bay Area art market, Hauser & Wirth has announced plans to open a new gallery in Palo Alto, California, in spring 2026. The gallery will occupy a historic, architecturally charming building at 201-225 Hamilton Avenue, a strategic location in the heart of Silicon Valley.
The Bay Area, known for its wealth and growing hub of collectors and corporate art patrons, presents an exciting opportunity for Hauser & Wirth. The region is home to many Top 200 collectors, including Laurene Powell Jobs, Marc Andreesen, Laura Arillaga-Andreesen, Larry Ellison, Robert Fisher, and Komal Shah and Gaurav Garg.
Palo Alto, in particular, has a rich art history. The city was home to Pace's initial Palo Alto gallery, a former Tesla showroom, which was seen as a strategic play to court tech collectors. Around the same time, David Powell Jobs, co-founder of Superblue, an immersive art venture, began to separate from the venture.
The Bay Area's culture is characterized by an active but discreet art collecting community. Navigating this market poses challenges for sales and visibility, as major galleries like Gagosian and Pace have recently closed their local locations. However, Hauser & Wirth's model, which integrates art with hospitality, education, and community spaces, offers them an edge.
Hauser & Wirth's new gallery in Palo Alto will offer programming, books, and activations alongside art. The gallery aims to engage a growing population of young collectors in the Bay Area. Architect Luis Laplace, principal of Laplace, will lead the renovation of the new gallery.
The Bay Area's art scene has seen a wave of mega-gallery expansion in the mid-2010s, with Pace and Gagosian opening locations in Palo Alto and San Francisco. Hauser & Wirth's entry into the market comes after Pace closed its outpost there in 2022. However, Hauser & Wirth's arrival is seen as a positive development, as the region's tech corporations, like Google, increasingly invest in art funding.
Laurene Powell Jobs, a long-time affiliate of Pace, has shifted her support to Hauser & Wirth, a sign of confidence in the gallery's new venture. The new gallery in Palo Alto will be Hauser & Wirth's first in the Bay Area. The gallery's Downtown Los Angeles complex and West Hollywood outpost are existing California locations.
