Apple postpones iPhone 18 release to 2027, introducing a new addition to the market: the foldable iPhone model instead.

In a significant move, Apple has unveiled its plans for the iPhone 18 series, revealing a dual-launch strategy that will see the debut of premium models in September 2026, with the base model and the iPhone 18e set to follow in early 2027.

The September 2026 lineup will consist of the iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the iPhone 18 Air becoming the de facto entry model due to a shift in Apple's pricing structure. To accommodate this shift, Apple is aiming to produce 25% of its iPhone production in India by 2026, establishing multiple facilities through partnerships with Foxconn and the Tata Group.

In a groundbreaking move, Apple will also debut a foldable iPhone alongside the premium models. This innovative device will boast a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover, and Samsung Display is expected to supply the foldable screen. Samsung Display and Chinese manufacturer Lens Technology will collaborate to produce the screens for Apple's first foldable iPhone, with Samsung providing a custom display panel and Lens Technology supplying ultra-thin glass, likely sourced with raw materials from Corning.

The launch of the foldable iPhone is anticipated to carry a price tag of around $1,999. This price point, coupled with the delay in the launch of the base model iPhone 18, could potentially compel buyers to rethink their upgrade cycles and device budgets.

The iPhone 18 launch strategy is designed to drive profits by increasing the premium model share but might temporarily slow total unit sales in Apple's largest markets. However, the company believes that this strategy could permanently alter consumer purchasing behavior patterns.

To cater to the growing demand, Apple has decided to diversify its manufacturing capabilities across multiple regions. Vietnam will handle much of Apple's non-iPhone production, while India is expected to become a significant hub for iPhone production, with most US-bound iPhones set to ship from India starting in 2025.

This dual-launch year for the iPhone series represents a pivotal moment in Apple's four-decade history. As the tech giant continues to push the boundaries of innovation, consumers can expect an exciting future for the iPhone series, with the introduction of groundbreaking technologies such as the foldable iPhone.
