AI Writing Aid Grammarly Enhances Accessibility with New Partnership
A new partnership between Latimer AI and Grammarly is set to improve the writing skills and cultural awareness of students in higher education.
John Pasmore, the CEO of Latimer AI, believes that writers need not become overly reliant on AI, but rather that AI is a tool that augments without replacing the work of real people. This collaboration is a testament to this philosophy, as both companies aim to provide an inclusive AI writing assistant bundle tailored for higher education.
The partnership combines Grammarly's AI communication assistant with Latimer's inclusive Large Language Model (LLM), which uniquely uses licensed and historically accurate content—such as material from the New York Amsterdam News, a historically significant Black newspaper—to mitigate bias and support culturally aware writing.
The joint tool will help students improve writing quality while promoting equity and inclusion, enabling thousands of educational institutions to enhance student success and inclusive learning outcomes without sacrificing usability or scale.
Key elements of their collaboration include bias mitigation and inclusive content through Latimer AI’s retrieval-augmented generation model trained on diverse and historically authoritative sources. Grammarly's trusted AI assistant will handle grammar and writing quality improvement, ensuring that the writing produced is not only accurate but also well-structured and coherent.
Addressing students' usage patterns and concerns about AI in education is another crucial aspect of the collaboration. The partnership will provide clearer guidance and support for ethical AI use, fostering both professional readiness and cultural sensitivity.
A phased rollout is planned, including integration across products, market strategies, and educational initiatives to maximize impact on writing skill and cultural awareness development over time.
Jenny Maxwell, Head of Education at Grammarly, stated that this partnership helps demonstrate their commitment to providing an inclusive LLM. More than 3,000 educational institutions will have access to Latimer AI through their collaboration with Grammarly.
Dr. Robert MacAuslan, VP of AI at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), is a customer of both Grammarly and Latimer AI. He acknowledges the importance of AI literacy and exposure for student success, and the inherent biases in AI tools due to those who design and maintain them.
Latimer AI employs a Retrieval Augmented Generation ("RAG") mode, which allows it to generate responses by searching for and incorporating relevant information from a large dataset. This approach ensures that the responses are not only accurate but also up-to-date and well-informed.
The collaboration between Grammarly and Latimer AI is a significant step towards enhancing students' academic success and improving learning outcomes by providing them with an inclusive and bias-free AI writing assistant.
