AI-in-focus film premiere: "Sweetwater" delves into fresh AI storylines

The AI on Screen initiative, a programme dedicated to supporting a diverse range of voices exploring the pivotal moment in technology and storytelling, has announced the start of its film festival run with the premiere of the short film "Sweetwater".

"Sweetwater", the first film produced under the AI on Screen programme, was unveiled in the recent past by an unspecified entity in partnership with Range Media Partners. The film, directed by and starring Michael Keaton Douglas, and featuring Kyra Sedgwick, tells the story of a late celebrity's son who encounters a holographic AI representation of his mother, forcing him to grapple with her digital afterlife and unresolved grief.

The premiere event took place at Cinema Village in New York and included a screening, followed by a post-show discussion with Sean Douglas and Michael Keaton Douglas. The Q&A, moderated by Joe Neumaier, delved into the themes of grief, family dynamics, and the amplification of human emotion in "Sweetwater". The discussion also explored the concept of generative ghosts, or the digital preservation of loved ones, which is central to the film.

The conversation further delved into what compelled the father-son duo to contribute a script to the AI on Screen short film program. The discussion highlighted the thought-provoking themes present in "Sweetwater", such as the complex relationship between humanity and AI.

The AI on Screen initiative is committed to exploring these complexities further. Upcoming updates include the second commissioned film, "Lucid", directed by Eglė Budvytytė. With "Sweetwater" making its debut and "Lucid" on the horizon, the AI on Screen programme is set to continue pushing the boundaries of technology and storytelling.
