Affordable rear-wheel drive variant of the BMW iX3 electric SUV confirmed to cost under $55,000
BMW is gearing up for an electrifying future, announcing plans to introduce a variety of new electric vehicles (EVs) by the end of 2027. Among these, the automaker will launch an i3 Touring wagon and an iX4 crossover-coupe, joining the already announced iX3 and i3 in its Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup.
In the near future, BMW USA will release the iX3 40 sDrive, an upcoming variant of the iX3. According to BMW's announcement, the iX3 40 sDrive will have a starting price below $55,000 and is expected to hit the roads in early 2027. The iX3 40 sDrive will be a rear-wheel-drive variant, unlike the usual eDrive used for single-motor EVs, and will also be available with a dual-motor xDrive setup, although pricing details for this version are yet to be disclosed.
The iX3 50 xDrive, a more potent version of the iX3, is slated for launch next summer and is expected to start at under $60,000 before options. In North America, the iX3 50 xDrive is estimated to offer up to 400 miles of range on the EPA cycle. However, BMW has not disclosed the usable battery capacity for the US-spec iX3 50 xDrive. In contrast, the European version of the iX3 50 xDrive is rated at 108.7 kWh.
Meanwhile, the i3, a sedan equivalent to the iX3, is set to debut next year and is expected to reach the market by late 2026 or early 2027. Unlike the iX3, the i3 is not expected to have a dual-motor xDrive setup. The i3's usable battery capacity for the US-spec model is not disclosed, but it's expected to cover 'slightly over' 300 miles, suggesting it will use a smaller battery pack compared to the iX3 50 xDrive. The i3's estimated range on the EPA cycle is also not mentioned.
BMW's Neue Klasse electric vehicle lineup will also include an electric 3 Series built on the Neue Klasse platform, the electrically powered iX5 expected in 2026, and new generations of the 3 Series, M3, and M5. An all-electric X6 could follow in 2028.
CLAR-based models like the X5 and X7 are scheduled to gain electric versions when their next generations arrive in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Stay tuned for more updates on BMW's electrifying future!
