Adding an Empty Page in Microsoft Word

Whether you're working on a lengthy document or a simple memo, there may come a time when you need to insert a blank page in your Word file. In this article, we'll show you two methods for achieving this task, using the Blank Page command or inserting a Page Break.

Method 1: Insert a Blank Page at a Specific Position

  1. Open your Word document and scroll to the location where you want to insert the new page.
  2. Place your cursor at the exact spot (beginning of a paragraph or line) where you want the new page to appear.
  3. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon at the top of the window.
  4. Click on Blank Page in the Pages group.
  5. Word will insert a new blank page at the cursor's position, pushing existing content after it to the next page.

Method 2: Insert a Page Break

  1. Place the cursor where you want to start a new page.
  2. Go to the Insert tab on the ribbon.
  3. Click on Page Break (or alternatively, press on your keyboard).
  4. This creates a break that pushes all content after the cursor to the next page, effectively inserting a new page at that position.

Additional Notes

  • If you want to insert a blank page at the very start of your document, position the cursor at the beginning and use the Blank Page button or Page Break.
  • To insert a page in the middle of the document, place the cursor between paragraphs or where desired, then insert as above.
  • Inserting a Section Break (Next Page) via the Layout tab > Breaks can also start a new page with more control over formatting, such as headers, footers, or page orientation, if needed.

By using these methods, you can insert a page exactly where you want within your Word document. The Blank Page command inserts a whole blank page, whereas a Page Break moves content to the next page without extra spacing.

If you want to adjust the type of break or section inserted (for example, starting on an odd or even page), you can do this via the Layout tab > Breaks > Section Breaks with options like New Page, Continuous, Even Page, or Odd Page.
